How to Transfer Large Amounts Internationally

Transferring large sums of money overseas inherently carries more risk than smaller transfers.

You stand to lose more if something goes wrong or exchange your currency at the wrong time, and youโ€™ll lose a proportionately higher amount of your money to excessive exchange rate margins.

As such, some money transfer providers are better suited than others to facilitate these types of transfers, but identifying the best provider for your needs can be a challenging task.

What is considered a large sum of money?

This question is a great place to start, as the threshold to be considered a โ€˜large amount of moneyโ€™ varies from person-to-person, which can sometimes confuse matters.

For the purposes of this article, weโ€™ll consider a โ€˜large sumโ€™ to be anything over AU$20,000.

For anything smaller, you simply wonโ€™t benefit from the majority of services being offered by firms specialising in large transfers, and youโ€™re better off just seeking out the cheapest way to transfer.

For those whose transfer requirements fall into the โ€˜large sumโ€™ category, the total transfer amount can still vary greatly, as it can include anything from the amount required to purchase a new car from overseas, all the way up to an overseas property purchase and beyond.

Those at the higher end of that scale will need to consider what the upper limits are for transferring money out of Australia.

Are there limits to how much I can send?ย

There are 3 main types of limits to consider when you transfer a large amount of money internationally.

The amount that your origin country lets you send outward

The total your recipient is allowed to receive in their destination country

Any transfer limits applied by your chosen provider

In your case, the first of these limits has a quick and easy answer, as the Australian government has no limits for how much you can send out of the country.

As a side note, thereโ€™s also no limit to how much you can bring in, which is useful for those that are transferring large sums of money to Australia.

However, some countries do have limits for how much a beneficiary can receive.

These limits can also vary depending on your delivery option, meaning there might be a lower limit if youโ€™re sending funds to a mobile wallet versus a bank to bank transfer.

India is an example of a country with fairly tricky limits in place, as they have multiple channels for inward remittance, that each have varying limits.

This is one of many reasons why having a dedicated account manager for guidance can prove hugely beneficial, but weโ€™ll discuss this in more detail later.

Transfer limits per provider

Take a quick look at the maximum send limits for some of Australiaโ€™s most popular payment providers.

Money transfer company / bankMaximum send limit
Send FXNo maximum (50,000 AUD for automated regular transfers)
OFXNo maximum
XeNo maximum (750,000 AUD online)
TorFXNo maximum (50,000 AUD online)
Westpac2m AUD per transaction (after specific approval)
Wise1.8m AUD per transaction
PayPal60,000 USD per transaction
ANZ50,000 AUD (daily)
CommBank5,000 AUD online (daily)
NAB5,000 AUD online (daily)

As you can see, itโ€™s simply not possible to send large transfers through some banks and PayPal.

In short, the easiest way to navigate transfer limits and adhere to all relevant regulations, is by ensuring your chosen provider is ASIC registered and regulated, and applies no restrictive limits of their own.

Another consideration is whether or not you need to declare that youโ€™re transferring large sums of money overseas.

Do I need to declare that Iโ€™m sending or receiving funds overseas?

Despite there being no limits to how much money you can bring in and out of Australia, you are still required to declare both ingoing and outgoing transfers above a certain amount.

AUSTRAC is the governing body in Australia that supervises financial transactions, and they require that all transfers above AU$10,000 be reported to them.

The good news is that unless youโ€™re sending your funds as cash, then you most likely wonโ€™t have to worry about any paperwork, as your bank or money transfer company will complete this report for you.

If for whatever reason you decide to send or travel with cash exceeding AU$10,000, then you have up to 10 business days to submit your report to AUSTRAC via its online portal on  its website.

Be aware that other monetary instruments like cheques and bearer bonds fall into the same category as cash and are subject to reporting.

This is not uncommon and similar rules apply for other western countries like Canada and the UK.

So now you know what classifies as a large transfer, and youโ€™re aware of some of the potential limits and regulations, letโ€™s look specifically at how to transfer a large sum of money and your available options.

How can I transfer a large amount of money?

Letโ€™s take a look at your options and their suitability for large transfers considering the following factors:

  • Cost
  • Speed
  • Security

Regarding cost, there are two things to consider with international transfers: exchange rate markups and transfer fees.

Hereโ€™s a look at the popular options at a glance, after which weโ€™ll look at each in more detail.

Banks

Australian banks are the most popular choice for overseas transfers, but theyโ€™re actually one of the most expensive choices available, so we rarely recommend them for sending your funds abroad.

Most Australian banks apply a very high exchange rate markup, also referred to as an fx margin, which is usually in the region of 2.5-5%.

For example, using Westpac to transfer large amounts, letโ€™s say AU$50,000 to GBP, youโ€™d lose AU$1,855 in the exchange rate markup alone, and could still potentially be charged a transfer fee on top of that.

A huge and largely unnecessary cost!

Whilst banks are an incredibly expensive option, they do offer some advantages, and undoubtedly, their biggest pro is safety, which is particularly important for large international transfers.

Thatโ€™s not to say there arenโ€™t safe alternatives, but with banks, the Australian Governmentโ€™s Financial Claims Scheme insures the money in your account up to AU$250,000, providing the ultimate peace of mind.

Regarding speed, a standard overseas transfer using your bank is not your fastest option, but most banks do offer an express delivery service, albeit for a hefty fee.

Despite the cost, this is a speedy and reliable route if youโ€™re in an emergency, as youโ€™ll also save time by not having to register with a new provider.

However, as weโ€™ve already shown, if you decide to use your bank for a large transfer, youโ€™ll need to check its upper limits.

All of Australiaโ€™s โ€˜big fourโ€™ have some sort of daily or transaction limits depending on whether you make your transfer online, over the phone, or in a branch, which might rule your bank out altogether.

Mobile wallets

Providers like PayPal are also hugely popular, primarily because of their biggest strength, convenience.

If your recipient also has a PayPal account, then it’s certainly one of the easiest and fastest ways to get your money from A to B.

You can skip having to request your recipient’s bank details, simply enter their name, PayPal handle, email, or mobile phone number, plus the amount you want to send, and youโ€™re good to go.

So whatโ€™s the catch? Cost!

PayPal is a very expensive route for international transfers, as they apply a flat 4% markup on their exchange rate, plus some additional small fees.

Youโ€™re also capped by a single transaction limit of 60,000 USD or equivalent, which will rule them out as an option for many large transfers.

Money transfer apps

While money transfer apps do not specialise in large transfers per say, they do offer a very cost effective and reliable service, so long as you choose the right one.

Leading firms in this category such as Wise offer extremely fast transfers, and for transactions towards the lower end of what is considered a โ€˜large sumโ€™, say AU$10-$20K, they might also be your most cost effective route.

For anything larger, youโ€™ll want to consider a currency broker.

Currency brokers

Without a doubt, these types of providers are the specialists when it comes to sending large amounts of money internationally.

Most leading firms will assign you a dedicated account manager, which means youโ€™ll receive industry leading service, alongside access to additional hedging tools and some of the best exchange rates available.

Choose any of our top rated currency brokers and it will be difficult to go wrong, as they essentially tick all boxes.

Letโ€™s take a better look at just why currency brokers are the best providers to transfer large amounts of money abroad.

Best way to send large amounts of money internationally – currency brokers

Customer service is particularly important for large transfers.

As we said at the top of this article, the more you send, the higher the risk, so itโ€™s natural that you might have some questions, want some guidance, or just be seeking a little reassurance.

You might also be wondering if thereโ€™s anything you can do to help reduce the total cost of your transfer.

Choose a leading currency broker and your dedicated fx expert will be able to answer all of these questions for you, putting you at ease and potentially helping you to make huge savings.

Let’s look briefly at how currency brokers help you to make big savings compared to using your bank.

Zero fees and bank-beating rates

Itโ€™s normal to assume that an industry leading service would come at a significant cost.

But in fact, the opposite is true.

Unlike Australiaโ€™s โ€˜big fourโ€™ banks that all impose some sort of transfer fee structure, the vast majority of leading currency brokers all charge zero fees.

Whilst this is certainly a positive, those who are savvy to international transfers understand that the biggest cost usually lies in the fx margin.

This is where currency brokers are leaps and bounds ahead of Australian banks as they add a far smaller markup, resulting in the true cost of your transfer being significantly less.

Remember our Westpac example earlier, where youโ€™d lose a whopping AU$1,855 in the fx margin?

Well, if you used a leading currency broker for that same AU$50,000 to GBP transfer, you could save as much as AU$1,500!

Whatโ€™s more, you can negotiate an even better rate over the phone if youโ€™re making a large transfer.

As a general rule of thumb, skipping the bank and choosing a currency broker can save you anywhere between 2-4% of the transfer total

Impressively, there are even more ways that currency brokers can help you to save, so letโ€™s look at these in more detail also.

Hedging Tools & Market Insight

Hedging tools are especially useful for larger transfers. If your payment is not due immediately, this provides both opportunity and risk, as the exchange rate is constantly changing.

Say youโ€™ve been researching how to transfer a large amount of money for a house purchase, and at the time, the exchange rate means that your Australian Dollar is strong and your purchase is within budget.

Hedging tools like โ€˜forward contractsโ€™ let you secure the current rate for a period of up to two years, which protects you from the exchange rate getting worse by the time you have to pay.

Other tools like market orders can be used in combination, essentially allowing you to set an upper and lower desired rate to automatically trigger your transfer.

This allows you to potentially get more for your money if the rate improves, but at the same time, protects you from the rate dropping any lower than you can actually afford.

Your account manager will work with the firmโ€™s market insight division, to help guide you based on industry trends and the history of your currency pair.

So assuming youโ€™re now on-board with using a currency broker, letโ€™s look at some of the top-rated firms to help you narrow down your choices.

Who are the best providers to transfer large amounts of money abroad?

Seeing as there are several great currency brokers to choose from, you can afford to be slightly more picky by adding to your criteria.

When you have questions about how to transfer large sums of money, itโ€™s an added bonus to work with a provider that has a presence and local office in your country or region.

Handily, you can use our comparison tool to filter your results by firms with local offices.

But with all factors considered, who do we believe โ€‹โ€‹offers the best money transfers for large amounts?

Weโ€™d recommend using either TorFX or Send Payments.

TorFX is a significant player in the Australian money transfer scene. Choosing them will give you access to great rates, award-winning customer service, and one of the best ranges of hedging tools available.

Send Payments is a newer and smaller provider compared to its competitors, but theyโ€™ve already earned a fantastic global reputation, earning a 99% positive review rating whilst transferring more than AU$1 billion in their first 5 years of business.

Both firms offer extremely competitive rates and fantastic service, so if time allows, you could register with both to get a feel for their platform and customer service before making your decision.

How can I transfer a large amount of money? Step by step

1. Register and verify your account

Youโ€™ll usually only need a government ID to get through the initial registration. However, seeing as youโ€™re looking to make a large currency transfer, expect to provide additional details about where the money has come from and how it came into your possession.

2. Enter your transfer details

This step will be far easier if you have an account manager for support, but regardless, the onus remains on you to ensure your recipient details are accurate. Youโ€™ll also need to double check the exchange rate youโ€™ve been offered and ensure youโ€™re aware of any applicable fees.

3. Pay for your transfer and lock in your trade

With your transfer details checked and confirmed, itโ€™s time to select your method of payment and lock in the trade to secure your exchange rate.

4. Track your transfer and wait for your funds to arrive

Now that your funds are en-route, youโ€™ll usually receive a reference of some kind that you can use to track your transfer for status updates until the funds arrive.

Summary

verdict

For overseas transfers larger than AU$10,000, itโ€™s important to take due diligence in carefully choosing the right provider for your needs.

Thereโ€™s more to consider with regards to tax, maximum limits, and regulatory compliance, so having guidance from an industry specialist can prove valuable in many ways.

Thatโ€™s one of several reasons we recommend currency brokers as the best way to send large amounts of money internationally.

Whether your transfer is related to inheritance, property purchase, emigration, or repatriating large proceeds from a house or business sale, currency brokers specialise in these types of transfers, so you wonโ€™t find a better service.

Theyโ€™ll guide you through how to use hedging tools to help manage risk and potentially get more for your money.

On top of that, most currency brokers charge zero fees and offer bank-beating rates, meaning youโ€™ll be getting one of the most cost effective solutions available, paired with the best service in the industry.

It really is a win-win!
